Building an AI Chatbot

AI Chat projects let you create a conversational AI chatbot that you can share with others. You define what the chatbot is for, and Buildify sets up the interface and AI behavior automatically.

Getting started

  1. From the dashboard, select AI Chat as your project type
  2. Choose a category that matches your chatbot's purpose
  3. Describe what you want the chatbot to do in the prompt field
  4. Click create

Example prompts:

Create a friendly customer support chatbot for a project management SaaS app. It should help users with common questions about billing, account setup, and how to use core features. If it can't answer something, it should direct users to contact support.

Build a learning assistant that helps high school students study for SAT math. It should ask students questions, guide them through problems step by step, and give encouraging feedback.

Chat categories

Choose the category that best describes your chatbot's purpose:

  • Startup Ideation & Validation — Brainstorming partners, market validation assistants
  • Product — Product-focused assistants, feature explainers, customer-facing bots
  • Marketing — Content brainstormers, copywriting helpers, campaign assistants
  • Sales — Sales assistants, lead-qualification bots, outreach helpers
  • Team Support — Internal helpers, onboarding bots, internal Q&A
  • Investor — Investor briefing assistants, pitch coaches
  • Research — Research partners, summarization assistants, study guides

The AI Chat workspace

When you open an AI Chat project, the workspace is a single chat window — the chat you have with the AI is the experience you're building.

  • The chat window in the middle is where conversations happen
  • Use it both for configuring/testing the chatbot and for what your end users will see

The toolbar shows the project name, a chat icon, and a Project Settings (gear) icon. There's no separate preview panel — the chat itself is the preview.

Configuring your chatbot's behavior

The initial prompt you provide sets the chatbot's persona, purpose, and boundaries. You can refine this after creation:

  • Persona — What's the chatbot's name and personality? (e.g., "Friendly, professional, uses first names")
  • Scope — What topics should it help with? What should it decline?
  • Tone — Formal, casual, encouraging, direct?
  • Escalation — What should it do when it can't help? (e.g., direct to a human, provide a contact link)

To adjust these, open the chat and tell the AI: "Make the chatbot more concise in its responses" or "Add a message at the start of every conversation introducing itself."

Using the knowledge base

For chatbots that need to answer questions about a specific product, service, or topic, add relevant information to the project's Knowledge Base. The AI will use this information when generating responses — making your chatbot more accurate and relevant.

This is the primary way to customize what your chatbot knows.

Sharing your chatbot

Click the Share button in the top-right of the workspace to get a preview link. Anyone with the link can start a conversation with your chatbot — no Buildify account required.
